Anthropic just handed Claude Code and Cowork users extra runway, while closing the free ride on Fable 5. If you use any of the three, something about your limits or your bill changed this week.
If you opened Claude and saw a screen asking you to claim $100 in free credits, you are not imagining things, and you are not being upsold. And if you build with Claude Code or run tasks in Cowork, you now have more room to work with, at least for a few more weeks. Here is the full picture on all three changes, and what to actually do about each.
Fable 5 access just became permanent, not free
Anthropic’s promotional window for Fable 5, the one that let subscribers use the model at no extra cost, closed on July 19, 2026 at 11:59:59 PM PT. Starting July 20, access splits by plan, and this time the split is permanent, not another temporary extension.
Here is how it breaks down:
- Max and Team Premium plans: Fable 5 stays included in your subscription, but capped at 50% of your normal weekly usage limits.
- Pro and Team Standard plans: Fable 5 moves to pay-as-you-go usage credits. As compensation for the switch, you get a one-time $100 credit that expires September 19, 2026.
- Enterprise (legacy seat-based): Premium seats get the same treatment as Max automatically. Standard seats need an admin to manually enable usage credits before Fable 5 works at all.
Once that $100 runs out on Pro or Team Standard, you are billed at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, the same rate as the Claude API and double what Opus 4.8 costs. Output-heavy tasks (long documents, big rewrites, generated code) will eat that credit fast, since output tokens are what drive most of the bill.
What to actually do about it
- Claim the credit now if you have not already. Open Claude, and if you are on Pro or Team Standard, you should see a banner offering the $100 credit. It does not apply itself. Click through and confirm.
- Check your plan type before you panic. If you are on Max or Team Premium, nothing changes for your wallet. You just get a smaller slice of your weekly limit reserved for Fable specifically.
- Estimate your real usage. A rough gut check: if you generate around 5 million input tokens and 2 million output tokens a month on Fable, that is roughly $50 plus $100, so about $150. Compare that to the cost of upgrading from Pro to Max before deciding to ride the credits.
- Route non-Fable work elsewhere. Sonnet 5 and Opus 4.8 remain on your normal subscription limits with no metering. Save Fable 5 for the tasks that genuinely need the extra capability, like large refactors or long research synthesis, not routine chat.
- Set a personal budget if you go the credits route. Since credits burn on a per-token basis with no built-in stop, decide upfront how much of that $100 you are comfortable spending before September 19, and check your usage dashboard periodically so you are not caught off guard.
Your Claude Code and Cowork limits just got bigger too
Separately from the Fable 5 change, Anthropic is running two limit boosts that are easy to miss if you only check your account occasionally.
Claude Code: weekly usage limits are 50% higher than standard through August 19, 2026. This covers Pro, Max, Team, and legacy seat-based Enterprise plans, applies automatically with no setup, and works across every surface Claude Code runs on: the CLI, IDE extensions, the desktop app, and the web.
Claude Cowork: your 5-hour usage limit inside Cowork specifically is doubled through August 5, 2026. This one is narrower than it sounds. It only touches the short usage window inside Cowork, not your weekly limit, and it does not extend to Claude Code or the regular chat app.
Both boosts exclude free plan users and consumption-based Enterprise seats. When each promotion ends, your limits drop back to standard, no notice needed, no action required on your end either way.
Step-by-step: get the most out of the boosted window
- Check your plan eligibility. If you are on Pro, Max, Team, or a legacy seat-based Enterprise plan, both boosts apply to you automatically.
- Front-load your Claude Code work before August 19. If you have a big migration, a large refactor, or a backlog of PRs to review, this is the week to push through it while the 50% bump is live.
- Use Cowork for short, intensive bursts before August 5. Since the Cowork boost only affects the 5-hour rolling window, it rewards concentrated sessions rather than spreading work thin across the week.
- Do not confuse the two. Claude Code’s boost is weekly and lasts longer. Cowork’s boost is about the short-term ceiling and ends two weeks sooner. Plan your heavier Cowork tasks accordingly.
- Watch your dashboard. Both promotions revert automatically. There is no announcement inside the product warning you the exact hour it happens, so do not assume the boosted number is permanent.
Honest limitations
None of this is dramatic, but a few things are worth knowing before you build habits around it.
- The $100 Fable credit is one-time. Once it is gone, there is no automatic renewal, and you are on metered billing until you cancel or switch plans.
- Both usage boosts are explicitly temporary. Anthropic has run similar Claude Code promotions before and let them expire, so do not assume this becomes the new standard.
- The Cowork boost is easy to misread as a weekly increase. It is not. It only doubles the short 5-hour ceiling.
- None of these changes affect the regular Claude web, desktop, or mobile apps outside of Fable 5 access itself.
Bottom line
If you are a heavy Fable 5 user on Pro, the math now matters. Claim your $100, track how fast you burn through it, and decide within the next few weeks whether upgrading to Max makes more financial sense than paying per token. If you use Claude Code or Cowork regularly, you have extra room right now that disappears in a few weeks, so use it before it resets.
If this saved you from getting blindsided by a surprise bill, send it to the one person on your team still asking why their Fable access suddenly needs a credit card.
