OpenAI just took the leash off ChatGPT’s free tier. Starting this week, Free and Go users move to a new default model, and starting next week, text chats stop having a limit at all. Free ChatGPT used to mean bumping into a wall mid conversation. Ask enough questions in a short window and you would get the “you have reached your limit, try again later” message, usually right when you needed the answer most. OpenAI is removing that wall for text chats. Not shrinking it. Removing it.
That is a real change for anyone who has been rationing prompts on a free account. It also comes with a smaller, faster model doing the answering, and that trade-off is worth understanding before you get too excited.

On August 6, 2026, OpenAI announced two separate updates to ChatGPT, one for free users and one for paying subscribers.

How to Actually Use This (Step by Step)
Nothing to install here. The rollout happens on OpenAI’s side, but knowing what to look for saves you a confused afternoon.
Step 1: Check which model you are on
Open ChatGPT on web or mobile and tap the model name at the top of the screen. If you are on a free or Go account, you should see GPT-5.6 Luna appear as the default sometime this week. If you still see GPT-5.5 Instant, the switch has not reached your account yet.
Step 2: Keep chatting past the old limit

The Accuracy Numbers, and the Catch Nobody Is Advertising
OpenAI ran an internal evaluation on financial, medical, and legal prompts that required precise factual detail. Compared with the outgoing GPT-5.5 Instant, responses containing at least one factual error were about 62 percent less common with GPT-5.6 Luna, and about 68 percent less common with the updated GPT-5.6 Sol. Those are OpenAI’s own internal numbers, not an independent audit, so treat them as a directional claim rather than a certified benchmark.
Here’s the catch worth knowing before you lean on Luna for anything important. Luna is the small, fast model in the GPT-5.6 family, built for everyday chat rather than frontier-level reasoning. The Decoder points out that the Think button only gives Luna more time to reason, it does not swap in a stronger model underneath. Free users lose access to OpenAI’s most capable reasoning model entirely under this new setup. For quick questions, drafts, and everyday chat, that trade barely registers. For anything you would stake real money or a grade on, it matters.
Why OpenAI Is Doing This Now
Removing usage caps on a free product is not charity, it is strategy. A few things are converging at once. - Luna reasoning longer via the Think button is not the same as running Sol. If your work depends on frontier-level reasoning, this update does not close that gap for free.
