WhatsApp turned on its first paid subscription in May 2026, and the name it picked, WhatsApp Plus, already belonged to a fake app that has been getting people banned since 2015. Here is what the real one costs, what it actually unlocks, and how to make sure you never download the wrong one.
Here’s the thing about WhatsApp. It stayed completely free for a decade. No ads in your chats, no premium tier, nothing to upgrade. Then on May 27, 2026, Meta flipped that switch and launched WhatsApp Plus alongside sister subscriptions for Instagram and Facebook. For $2.99 a month, you get a handful of cosmetic upgrades. Your actual messaging, calling, and encryption stay exactly as free as they always were.
That part is simple. What makes this confusing is the name. “WhatsApp Plus” has been floating around app forums and shady download sites since around 2015, promising a free modded version of WhatsApp with extra features. It is not made by Meta, it breaks WhatsApp’s terms of service, and using it can get your account permanently banned with no appeal. Two products, same name, one of them can wreck your account. Let’s sort out which is which.
What WhatsApp Plus Actually Is
The real WhatsApp Plus is a subscription built directly inside your existing WhatsApp app. You do not download anything separate. It shows up as an option under Settings once it reaches your region, and subscribing unlocks a set of personalization features layered on top of the WhatsApp you already use.
Meta’s head of product, Naomi Gleit, announced the launch alongside Instagram Plus ($3.99 a month) and Facebook Plus ($3.99 a month), calling them richer ways for people to express themselves, with more features coming over time. It is part of a broader push Meta is calling Meta One, which will eventually bundle in AI subscriptions and creator tools too.
A few things WhatsApp Plus is not, because the confusion here is genuinely earned:
- It is not a separate app. There is no APK, no alternate download link, nothing outside the App Store or Play Store.
- It is not required. Messaging, calling, groups, channels, and end to end encryption stay free whether you subscribe or not.
- It is not Meta Verified. That is a different, older product focused on identity verification and badge protection, and Meta has confirmed it is not going anywhere.
- It is not the unofficial WhatsApp Plus APK. More on that below, because this is the one that actually matters for your account’s safety.
The Two “WhatsApp Plus” Apps: How to Tell Them Apart
If you searched “WhatsApp Plus” before reading this, you probably hit a wall of conflicting results. That is because an unrelated third party mod has used the same name for over a decade, and it is a real risk, not a technicality.

If you see “WhatsApp Plus APK” or “download WhatsApp Plus free” anywhere outside your phone’s actual app store, close the tab. That version has nothing to do with this launch, and Meta has no way to protect your account if something in that download goes wrong.
What You Actually Get for $2.99 a Month
Every confirmed feature is cosmetic. None of it touches your privacy, your security, or how messages actually get delivered.
- Exclusive stickers with full screen special effects, marked with a small WhatsApp Plus label so recipients know where they came from.
- Custom app themes and icons, visible only on your own screen. The people you message never see your theme choice.
- Premium ringtones you can assign to specific important contacts.
- Pin up to 20 chats, a big jump from the standard limit of three.
- Customizable chat lists, so a folder like “Work” or “Family” can get its own theme, alert tone, and ringtone instead of setting each contact individually.
That is the full list at launch. Meta has said more personalization features are planned, but nothing beyond this set is confirmed yet, so treat any “coming soon” claims you see elsewhere with a healthy dose of skepticism.
How to Subscribe to WhatsApp Plus
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version. The rollout so far has been Android first, with iOS still pending.
- Open Settings inside the app.
- Look for a new Subscriptions entry. It only appears once WhatsApp Plus has reached your country and app version.
- Tap WhatsApp Plus and review the features and price for your region.
- Confirm your payment method. Billing runs through the Google Play Store on Android, or the Apple App Store once iOS support lands.
- Complete the purchase. Your themes, icons, stickers, extra pins, and list customization unlock right away.
To manage or cancel later, go to Settings > Subscriptions > WhatsApp Plus. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and you generally keep your benefits until the current billing period ends. Some early users are also seeing a free trial, though that is not guaranteed in every market.
What It Costs Around the World
Meta is using region based pricing here instead of one flat global rate.

If your country is not on this list yet, that usually means the rollout has not reached you. Meta typically prices new markets closer to local purchasing power than a straight currency conversion, so check Settings inside your own app once it is live rather than assuming the US price applies.
India is a good example of that. WhatsApp Plus reached Indian accounts gradually through May and June 2026, and it showed up with a one month free trial attached, something that was not confirmed for every market at global launch. Once the trial ends, billing switches to Rs 79 a month, charged through the Play Store or App Store the same way it works everywhere else. If you are in India and see the offer inside Settings, the free month is real and worth using before deciding whether the customization features are worth keeping past the trial.
Who This Is Actually For
If you are the kind of person who already customizes everything, changes wallpapers constantly, and has strong opinions about ringtones, $2.99 a month for exclusive themes and 20 pinned chats is a small, reasonable price for a feature set you would probably use daily.
If you mostly use WhatsApp to text your group chat and check in with family, none of this changes your day to day experience even slightly, and skipping it costs you nothing. Core messaging was never on the table here. Meta made that clear from day one, and so far that has held.
One group this genuinely does not apply to yet: WhatsApp Business users. WhatsApp Plus is restricted to personal accounts. If you run a business and want a badge, impersonation protection, or a professional profile page, that is a separate, older product called Meta Verified for WhatsApp Business, and it has nothing to do with this launch.
The Honest Limitations
- iOS support is not live yet. The launch has been Android first, with no confirmed date for iPhone.
- WhatsApp Business accounts are excluded entirely, at least for now.
- Pricing outside the confirmed markets is still unknown. If you are not in the US, Europe, Pakistan, or Mexico, you are waiting on an announcement.
- The feature list is thin. Compared to what Telegram Premium or Snapchat+ offer for a similar price, this is a narrower, more cosmetic bundle.
- Rollouts are gradual by design. “Now available” from Meta has historically meant weeks of staggered access, not an instant switch for everyone.
The Bottom Line
WhatsApp Plus is real, it is optional, and it will not change how you use WhatsApp unless you choose to pay for it. The bigger favor you can do for anyone in your contacts right now is make sure they know the difference between this and the fake APK that has been circulating for over a decade. One costs $2.99 and does nothing but change how your app looks. The other can cost you your account.
