ChatGPT Intelligent UI: What It Does and 5 Prompts to Try Today

ChatGPT stopped being a wall of text on October 7. OpenAI launched GPT-6 in ChatGPT with a feature called Intelligent UI, which means your answers can now come with tappable buttons, forms, charts and small working tools you can use right inside the chat. Free and Go users start getting it today. Here is what it does, how to try it in five minutes, and where it still falls short.

What Intelligent UI Actually Is

Until now, every ChatGPT answer looked the same: paragraphs, maybe a list, maybe a table. Intelligent UI changes the shape of the answer itself. According to OpenAI’s launch post, GPT-6 was trained to build a response from text, visuals and interactive elements, and to pick the mix based on your question. Think graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and mini experiences you can play with without leaving the conversation.

OpenAI gives a few examples worth stealing:

  • A Sunday roast plan where the cooking timeline sits next to the recipe, and a servings control rescales the shopping list.
  • A road trip with the stops on a map and notes on what deserves a detour.
  • Interactive explainers for the central limit theorem, GDP and the Monty Hall problem, where you change an input and watch what happens.
  • Tools made on request, such as a retirement savings calculator, a dinner bill splitter or a small game.

The part I like most is that it is not forced. OpenAI says a comparison might show up side by side, an explanation might become an interactive diagram, and when plain text is the best answer, you still get plain text.

The TechCrunch report by Lucas Ropek adds a useful demo from the launch call. A TechCrunch article describes an OpenAI product manager asking ChatGPT how an airplane wing generates lift, and the chatbot instantly producing several diagrams to show it. Same question you could have asked last week. A very different answer.

Who Gets It and When

The rollout is staggered, and the model behind your chat depends on your plan. Here is the breakdown from OpenAI.

PlanModel in ChatWhen it starts
Plus, Pro, BusinessGPT-6 SolOctober 7
EnterpriseGPT-6 SolOctober 7, depends on workplace admin settings
Free, GoGPT-6 LunaOctober 8 (today)

Two details matter. First, this applies to the Chat experience only. OpenAI says the models behind ChatGPT Work and Codex are not changing with this release. Second, OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week, so expect your feed to fill up with screenshots of this over the next few days.

There is a speed angle too. GPT-6 can start answering while it is still thinking, and OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant begins answering web search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. That number comes from OpenAI’s own evaluation, so treat it as a company claim, not an independent test.

Step by Step: How to Try Intelligent UI Today

You do not need a special setting. You just need to ask in a way that gives the model something to build. Here is the fastest path.

  1. Open ChatGPT on web or mobile and update the app. Intelligent UI works across both, and it lives in the Chat tab. If you are on Free or Go, it may take a few hours to show up today, so check back if nothing changes.
  2. Start a new chat. An old thread may keep its old look, so a fresh conversation is the cleanest test.
  3. Ask for a thing, not just an answer. Words like plan, compare, calculate, explain how it works and build me a tool give the model a reason to reach for visuals.
  4. Touch everything. Tap the buttons, change the numbers, switch the tabs. The whole point is that the answer responds to you.
  5. Steer it. If you get a wall of widgets and just want text, say so in your next message. If you want more visuals, ask for a diagram or a calculator by name. OpenAI says plain text still appears when it is the most useful answer, so your instructions are the lever you have.
  6. Test any tool before you trust it. Run a number you can check in your head. A savings calculator with 100 at 0% growth should return 100. If it does not, the tool is wrong.

Five Prompts That Show Off the New Interface

Copy these as they are, then swap in your own details.

1. For learning something abstract

Explain how an airplane wing creates lift. Make it interactive so I can change the wing angle and see what happens.

2. For splitting a bill without the awkward math

Build a bill splitter for six people. One person skipped drinks, and we want to add a 15% tip.

3. For travel planning

Plan a three day road trip from Lisbon to Porto. Show the stops on a map and tell me which ones are worth a detour.

4. For money questions

Create a savings calculator. I can put away 400 a month. Let me adjust the return rate and see the total after 10 years.

5. For making a concept stick

Teach me the Monty Hall problem, then let me play it 20 times so I can see the odds for myself.

Prompt 5 is my favorite. Reading that switching doors wins two thirds of the time never convinced me. Playing it twenty times might.

What This Really Means for You

Here is the thing. Most people use AI chat like a search box that talks back. Intelligent UI nudges it toward something closer to an app that gets built around your question, then thrown away when you are done.

That helps different people in different ways:

  • Students can learn by changing inputs instead of rereading a paragraph. Statistics and physics concepts are the obvious fit.
  • Small business owners can spin up a quick pricing, discount or break even calculator in one message, without opening a spreadsheet.
  • Anyone planning something gets a plan with a map and a timeline instead of a long list they have to mentally rearrange.

OpenAI is open about where this is headed. Its post says that over time it wants ChatGPT to create more of the interfaces people need, so you describe what you want to do and work with an experience built around it. Whether you love that idea or find it a little unsettling, it explains why this launch matters more than a new button.

If you are on a Free or Go plan, this is also a good moment to review your data settings. I walked through them in my post on the latest ChatGPT Ads changes. And if you are following the broader race to make AI do things for you, my comparison of OpenAI Dots and Meta Muse is a good companion read.

Honest Limitations

I would not hand this feature the keys just yet. A few things to know before you rely on it.

OpenAI itself says there is still work ahead to improve the model’s design judgment and expand what it can create. Translation: some layouts will be clumsy, and some interactive pieces will be more decoration than help.

A calculator that the model builds on the spot has not been audited by anyone. It can look polished and still be wrong. Use the quick test from the tutorial, and never make a financial decision from a tool you have not checked.

TechCrunch reports that the feature is customizable and that you can dial the visuals back. OpenAI’s launch post does not point to a specific toggle, so I could not confirm where that control lives. Check your ChatGPT settings, and until then, telling the chat what format you want in your message is the dependable option.

Rollout is uneven. Paid plans got it first, Free and Go start today, and Enterprise access depends on your admin. If you do not see it yet, you are probably not doing anything wrong.

Finally, the speed number is OpenAI’s own internal result. Nobody outside the company has verified it yet.

The Bottom Line

Intelligent UI moves ChatGPT a long way from a plain chat window and closer to a tool shop that builds itself around your question. The best way to judge it is to stop reading about it and run two of the prompts above in a fresh chat today. If one of them saves you a spreadsheet, you will see why OpenAI is betting on this.

Know a student, a teacher or a friend who still treats ChatGPT like a text box? Send them this post before they find out the hard way that it now builds calculators.
